Fibroscan Test

Liver Fibroscan

Specifically, it uses ultrasound technology to determine the degree of fibrosis or scarring that may be present in your liver from various liver diseases or conditions. This information is then used by your gastroenterologist to individualize and optimize your treatment plan. For some patients, Fibroscan can replace liver biopsy.

FibroScan test results are always used in conjunction with other clinical data, laboratory test results, and liver imaging in managing individual patients.

The FibroScan test is a completely non-invasive, simple and painless procedure that takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Most patients with chronic liver disease can be assessed, but the test is not recommended or interpretable in patients with:

  • Fluid in the abdomen (i.e. ascites, variceal bleeding or hepatic encephalopathy)
  • Acute hepatitis
  • Right heart failure
  • Severe obesity
  • Small rib spaces
  • Inability to lie flat

FibroScan liver test

is useful for diagnosis of the following liver conditions:

  • Hepatitis B
  • Autoimmune Hepatitis
  • Primary Biliary Cirrhosis
  • Liver Cirrhosis
  • Hepatitis C
  • Wilson's disease
  • NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Alcoholic liver disease

Fibrotouch Mini800 Liver Scan

  • What is Fibroscan/ Fibrotouch?

    +

It is a painless, accurate, simple, and non-invasive test to assess health of the liver. It helps to identify liver stiffness (scarring) and quantify liver fat. Thereby helping to find early or late damage occurring to the liver.

  • Why should one do Fibroscan/ Fibrotouch?

    +

One should do this test to detect liver problems at earlier stage, so that liver cirrhosis which is end point of multiple liver problems can be prevented and treated. It can also be used to assess treatment response.

  • How Fibroscan/ Fibrotouch is better than USG (ultrasound/ ultrasonography)?

    +

USG helps us to screen whether one has fatty liver or any liver related problems. However, it cannot exactly quantify severity of fibrosis or fat in the liver. Nowadays, many USG mounted fibroscan software modules are available. However, this software cannot assess fat in the liver. Also they are bit inferior to the dedicated machine specially designed fibrotouch machines.

  • Which group of patients should do Fibroscan/ Fibrotouch?

    +

A patient having alcohol use disorder (Chronic Alcohol intake), fatty liver on ultrasound, hepatitis B, C, D, Obesity, Diabetes, Dyslipidemia, Non-Alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), portal hypertension, autoimmune liver diseases, family history of liver ailments should get this test done.

  • How is the procedure done?

    +

Patient requires 2-3 hours of fasting or as directed by the treating doctor. The procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. In the intercoastal spaces on the right-side, tip of the probe is placed. Vibrations are felt here when readings are taken. Procedure is painless and without any discomfort.

  • What is the test related interpretations?

    +

Test helps us to determine stages of fibrosis ranging from no fibrosis, F1, F2, F3 and F4. It also helps to quantify fat percentage and classify as mild, moderate, and severe. Depending on this staging, treatment is given to the patients.

  • What machine is available at MediGenix Gastroenterology and Dermatology Centre?
